Why You Should Be Careful Getting Science Info From the News
Saturday, May 23rd, 2009
I am so tired of reading misrepresentations of studies in the news. It causes panic and polarizes people on subjects. The latest controversy is a daycare study that says the longer kids spend in institutional care, the more behavioral problems they have once they begin school. There are so many caveats or reasons this could be, and it’s quite possible that it has absolutely nothing to do with daycare whatsoever. Not to mention that there have been other studies contradicting this one. CBS picked it up, however, and now there is controversy in the blogosphere over how those parents who must work are practically abusing their kids, etc. So I was quite happy today to run into this little chart from PhD comics. (Click on it to get to the original.)
Just remember this the next time you read a news story sensationalizing some new discovery.
